9:36 am - With apologies (and a biscuit) to John Denver
After two days of failing to get through on the helpline and then a tense weekend when they don't take calls...

[WARBLING IN SHOWER, PUNCTUATED BY BLASTS OF WATER AND/OR FLANNEL IN THE FACE:]
Sunshine... through my windows... makes me sweaty...
Fresh air... and a shower... keeps me cool...
Nice stories... on my flist... make me happy...
Crisis loan... waiting for me down at the JobCentre PlusTM... makes me intensely relieved!

Yuss! I can haz electricity after Wednesday!

2:44 pm - Shocked realisation no. 4756382910:
I have been alive for more than 2.2% of the time that has passed since Jesus was born. (Never mind the significantly shorter time since he died!)

      =8oO

----

On the other hand, this apparently means that I'm finally grown-up enough to start dating:

(Yes, but how would it affect my scores if you incorporate the fact that the consistent misspelling of "sacrifice" makes my blood boil...? =:o\ )

12:45 am - OK, colour me obsessed.
I *like* the way that "Watch" are promoting Doctor Who (NuWho) Season 3.

First, the short version: "Doctor!" "Master." (We've been getting that for a week.)

Now: the slightly longer version: [MUSIC BUILD-UP WITH ASSORTED CLIPS, LEADING TO:] "Doctor!" "Master."

In the words of Commander Uvanov: "What next I wonder?"

12:15 am - Thanks to all...
... for their feedback on Firefox 3.5;

... for having me on their flist;

... for reading this even if you don't have me on your flist;

... for being out there and breathing;

... for writing such interesting and thought-provoking and sometimes seriously *challenging* stuff;

... for supporting the global economy;

... for voting (even if you voted for the other lot, or for the *other* other lot);

... for having birthdays (even though I'm too jaded and penny-pinching to send any of you cards or prezzies);

... for the music;

... for being alive!

... for Pringles. Of which I could really do with one right now. [NODS]

Here. Accept this piggy as your reward. =:o}

8:29 pm - Anyone upgraded to Firefox 3.5 yet?
Any impressions, bug reports, etc?

I like the sound of much faster javascript execution etc. (some of my favourite js-heavy pages are so *SLOW* to load, and so creaky and unresponsive to interact with!), but I want to make sure it doesn't come at the cost of load of *new* irritants.

current mood: curious/hopeful

3:01 am - Oh thank God...
1. The LJ user rep elections are over, and the result (for the English-typing rep - I know nothing about the Cyrillic-typing one) is someone with a concrete and useful (if surprisingly narrowly focussed) set of objectives, and some visible evidence of a reasonably level head.

2. Cool air is *finally* starting to seep in through the slightly-open window here. Hopefully it won't be accompanied by any more moths.

current mood: tired but relieved

5:06 pm - Authors and wannabe authors, take note.
It's good to see a whole bunch of my friends are having creative spurts at this time. (How do they manage it in this heat?!?)

It's also good that some of them are finding ways to get their works out and into the public eye at last. However, here lies a pitfall: you are sooner or later going to find your work reviewed not only by your friends who love you, but also by the (alleged) scum of the universe. I refer of course to... [DRAMATIC CHORDS] critics!

5:07 pm - Van der Filk / Vixy & Tony
So, yeah, there's like, this filk con thing we do every February, right? And the next one is, kind of, like, jointly my responsibility to get set up and running, y'know? What with me being the concom chair, and all that. And it sort of needs to get a few more members, 'cos what with all the recession and stuff, there's like, not so many people joined so far as usual, yeah? And the ones that have, there's more of them bought unwaged memberships than usual, OK?

So like, um, I've been looking for something I could dangle before you all as a bribe carrot to make you all wanna hurry up and join our mighty, mighty convention of filk(!!) and come and be with us and listen with us and sing with us in good ol' Grantham next February...

...And then, all of a sudden, [info]seanan_mcguire posts a link to a YouTube vid of a Certain Group of PersonsTM performing at Duckon. So now you can see our fabulous US GoH's, Vixy and Tony, performing along with Seanan and Sooj and Amy The Invisible Violinist on songs such as, for example, Wicked Girls, or "Still Catch the Tide" (by our very own UK born & bred & still-hasn't-run-away-yet Talis Kimberley).

And they're coming here! Next February! Aren't we lucky?!? So, like, join up and stuff, you know? It'll be cool! =:o>

At least, a lot cooler than my attempts at typing up publicity blurb in cool-speak, anyway. =:o?

2:11 pm - At last!
I just heard someone on Gardener's Question Time using the phrase "belts and braces" in the same sense in which I use it: Having a backup system or a fallback plan; Not taking any chances.

I've had *so* many people over the years look at me askance when I use that phrase and ask what I was blithering about, ever since I first picked it up from my usual primary educational source* in the 1970s, that I had grown to doubt that it was ever a known phrase with that meaning at all, and I'd just read too much into one of Patrick Troughton's infamous on-the-fly paraphrases of his lines. But hearing it used quite casually, to affirm the wisdom of *not* transplanting a sensitive plant from one part of the garden to another but instead taking a cutting from it to plant in the new location (thereby ensuring the original plant survives even if the new location proves unviable), has quite relieved my mind on the matter.

And only then, of course, did I finally get around to Googling it, and finding this:
http://www.phrases.org.uk/meanings/61250.html

So that's all settled that then. =:o}

*(Yes, a Doctor Who story. Specifically, "The Three Doctors". 2Doc and 3Doc are patiently explaining to Jo about the TARDIS defenses:
Jo: "Then what's the forcefield for?"
3Doc: "The same thing."
2Doc: "Belts and braces."

1:08 am - Classic Television.
"Only one pound for a CM Enterprises 'Rubber Relaxer'! Nine out of ten people who'd tried them couldn't be bothered to say whether they'd worked or not!!"

-------

Next scene: "The Crossed Legs Confrontation"...
Am I the only one who can see a future for Sam and Kenny? Let's face it, the only man she could ever form a permanent bond with is a very easy-going and forgiving one! Dammit, why did Gabby Anwar have to leave the show after only one season?

(Come to that, why did Lee Ross have to leave after only four?)

We want ruffling of hair! We want it *now*!!!

Then again: "Flatter 'em; Challenge 'em; Doubt 'em. Never fails."
- Makes you see the whole scene from a different angle. (And some people say Moffat doesn't know how to write women? Pah! =:o} )

In other news: "Press Gang" is *AWESOME*!!!!
(Oh... Sorry, that's the same news. [BLUSH] )

"Welcome!
You were recently appointed to appear complimentary in the 2009/2010 Edition of Princeton Who#8217;s Who of Executives Professionals and Entrepreneurs.

"Appear complimentary"? Bloomin' cheek! I'll have you know, if I were to give my permission to be included, I would in fact *be* compimentary! =:o}

12:06 pm - Now this is a man I can get along with.
Not afraid to question himself with the same critical eye he turns on the rest of the world, and be equally blunt about it. Aware of the multiplicity of factors, and resulting complexity of interactions, that play into every human instinct, decision, and action.

Stephen Barnes.

Time to bump "Lion's Blood" further up my wishlist. Oddly, I bought the CD of the music (by Heather Alexander) about three years back, intending too buy the book soon after. Never got round to it. (Probably just hit a tight month, followed by two or three more tight months...) Time I did. [NODS]

2:40 am - ...And congratulations also to:
[info]alihawke and hubby Paul, who have now officially escaped the country by legal means! =:o}

(I love the idea of being "sworn in" as citizens of a country: "We ain't sh***in' you, these folks are genuwine go**amn fu**ing Americans!"

Imagine it over here: "Y'know, these chaps are jolly well rather bloody British, actually!")

11:24 pm - Update on the R word.
Just linking here to a very useful and level-headed discussion from 2006, in which "The Angry Black Woman" starts from the opposite side of the linguistic divide and essentially mirrors (or more accurately, was later mirrored by) what I did in my recent post:
http://theangryblackwoman.com/2006/09/18/monday-debate-what-is-racism/

I've seen this usage in enough different places now to agree that what some refer to as "the sociological definition of Racism" certainly ought to be appearing in any reasonably up-to-date dictionary alongside the simpler/more simplistic one I grew up with. (Dictionaries of course can/should only ever describe existing usage, not prescribe it.)

I'm not so happy with the "equation" that's often used (as it is in the linked article) to summarise the sociological definition, and it's clear I'm not alone in that. For those who already understand the argument that it's summarising, I can see it's a handy aide-memoire; but for those who don't, it's just confusing, and the result is a screaming match between "if you don't understand this, then you know nothing about racism!" and "well you know nothing about how to construct an equation!": not so much "derailment" as a collison between two high-powered locomotives that had the points switched on them by a well-meaning third party.

Now, at some point, I probably ought to do a post on what I've been learning about the actual *issue*... =:o} In the meantime, here's a wise and relevent YouTube vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b0Ti-gkJiXc
