3:44 pm - Ah, sweet analog memories...
|
I used to own the little brother of this thing. Mine was an MS20, "MS" meaning "Monophonic Synthesizer" (only produced one note at a time; no chords.)
The upper section, the panel opver the keyboard, was a very similar layout and the circuitry behind there was basically the same (the main difference being the little slide-switches seen here for things like flipping the polarity of the modulation oscillator: Their size and positioning reflects the fact these were after-thoughts on the original MS20 panel design, I'd say.) 12:45 pm - "Come in, the ceiling's open!"

I'm not quite sure if there's some kind of major work being carried out in the building that involves a lot of lopsidedly rythmic banging, or if the bloke upstairs' daughter has just decided that the best way to pass the time while visiting Dad is to play hopscotch up and down the landing.
Several times a day. For at least half an hour each time. =:o\
Given that this is the third day running, and the particular shifts in pattern as the elephant sound source in question moves nearer and further away, I'm leaning heavily towards the latter theory.
...But then you get little bits like *now*, which definitely sounds like carefully applied hammering in specific spots.
Maybe they've taken my advice and decided to fit new decently thick floors, and the "hopscotch" is just where they're trying to flatten the boards/concrete/insulation/whatever down, or something? [IS CONFUSED]
I may have to pop up soon and ask what's going on.

4:16 pm - Three hours to go before "The Damp Patch at Ma's"...

...and I've just got around to having breakfast. =:o\
Thoroughly enjoying the peace and quiet today, with genuine sunshine and no gale blowing outside, and a decent room temperature (sans heaters), and for once I am actually *relaxed* rather than just tired-but-antsy. Tending to get utterly mesmerised for two or three hours at a strech by trivia, though, which is... Well, fine for a day off, which I suppose is what I'm having today, but not so fine when there are things waiting to be done.
If I just get one specific little thing done today, though, then I think I can officially kick back for the rest of the day and not feel guilty. So I thnk I'd better just do that now.

HI, MY NAME IS: Paul.
I COME FROM: Surrey, UK (but now living in Cheltenham).
WHEN I GROW UP I WANT TO BE: a forensic plumber a solver of knotty IT problems that others have given up hope of ever solving, for a boss who knows what they want and why, and is prepared to be patient in order to get excellent results. (Although I also do a nice side-line in major IT crisis resolution.) *In my own office*! (Open plan, we hates it with a passion, yes we does!) Ideally having something to do with video processing.
PLEASE SHARE WITH ME: Job openings in the South of England (but NOT in London) that pay at least 14k.
(N.B. I'm describing the kind of position that typically claims upwards of 30k, but usually comes with a lot of hassles and bureaucratic obstacles to productivity. Money is good; The authority to do what needs to be done is better.)

11:54 am - "Busting makes me feel good..."
|
OK, here's an example of my "Ghost-Busting" process which shows both the potential and the drawbacks of the method. It's taken from an unfinished/buggy version of the process - I can do better now.
The layout of the six panels here is a clockwise flow through the process, starting from the top left corner and looping back to give the final output bottom left (directly under the original source, for comparison).
Source; PosPairs; NegPairs; Output; (mid grey); Difference;

1:11 pm - Adventures in video processing.
|
So yesterday, I spent most of the day ghost-busting! =:o} Specifically, trying to devise a way to eliminate duplicate or "ghost" images on frames of video that had been created by blending pairs of frames (well, fields, technically) from the original video - without just introducing even more obvious ghost images lagging further behind the real ones. 11:09 pm - Picture the scene...

Christmas is over, a month-old memory. There are no more presents left to open. Either you're back at work, or you're *still* not back at work, and either way you're depressed. What you wouldn't give for a chance to kick back with a beer, or a cup of tea, or maybe with your eyes closed*, and take in some gentle, soul-stirring late-night harmonies... Or laugh your way through a parodic punfest. Or sing along with the sentient ships that slip through the seams of the spacefabric. Or shiver your timbers and goose all your bumps, with a piratical ditty of ghosts at sea!
Or maybe just collect more hugs per hour than is possible in any other known location in the British Isles. =:o}
Van der Filk: Because the Commissaris would like you to come along quietly**...
*Caution: The concom will not accept responsibility for any damage or injury incurred while attempting to combine any two of these activities!
**Or even not so quietly. Really, we're not fussed!

Fascinating debate between a researcher and a debunker http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Lenski_dialog
Of course, seeing the debate neatly framed like this, out of context, with no links provided to the original discussion containing the near- if not actually-libellous jibes that Lenski quotes as having been made against him, requires us to assume that Lenski is not himself indulging in libel.
And so, both the debate itself, and the presentation of it on the page I've linked to, nicely illustrate one of the key problems facing public acceptance of the knowledge emerging from advanced science: Lack of access to the evidence. ( Read more... )
